Late in the afternoon I was called down to the library.
From the garden I could hear the happy laughter of the
children with their father. It cut my heart, and quite help-
lessly I thought to myself :
“No, I can't say good-bye to
any of them. I will simply leave.”

庭から子供たちと父親の楽しそうな笑い声が聞こえました。
その声は私の胸にしみました。どうしようもないことを
私は自分に言い聞かせました。
「だめ。子供たちに、とてもさよならは言えないわ。
単に黙って立ち去りましょう。」
