Time and again I had been warned by the Mistress of
Novices that I could not race over the staircase like
that, taking two and three steps at a time ;
that I definitely could not slide down the banister ;
that whistling, even the whistling of sacred tunes,
had never been heard in these venerable rooms before ;
that jumping over the chimneys on the flat roof of the
school wing was not fitting for an aspirant to the novitiate
of the holy Order of Saint Benedict.
I agreed whole-heartedly each time, but the trouble was,
there were so many trespasses occurring every day.

再三再四、私は、教育長から、注意を受けていました。
階段をそんなスピードで、走っては、いけません、とか、
二段、三段と、一度に、跳ねて、登り降りしないこと、
とか、手すりを滑り降りるのは、絶対に、だめ、だとか、
この厳かな修道院では、（どこの部屋であっても）口笛
を吹くなんて、前代未聞、（だめです。）それが、聖歌で
あっても。校舎の平屋根の煙突から、飛び降りるだなんて、
聖ベネディクト修道会の準尼僧候補生のすることではない、
などなど。
私は、注意されるたび、つくづく、そうだと思った。
でも、難儀なことに、来る日も来る日も、規則違反を犯し
てばかりでした。
