There I sat on a richly-carved, dark chair, which
reminded me somewhat of the choir stalls in the Abbey.
Curiously I looked around for the lion and tiger skins and
the strange weapons, but only a few ancient pieces of
furniture stood in the large hall, and two dark oil paintings
hung on the wall.

there は「そこで」
実はthere のあとに主語と動詞は倒置になることが多い
のですが、ここでは「物事の生起、出来」などではなく
単にon a richly-carved, dark chair の前座を務めるものです．
なので主語述語は倒置しません．
次のwhich は関係代名詞の非限定用法で、
