The Gospel of Holy Thursday having told, after the institu-
tion of the Blessed Sacrament, the touching incident of Jesus
washing the feet of His disciples, finishes with these words ; " If
then I, being your Lord and Master, have washed your feet,
you also ought to wash one another's feet."
Therefore, the venerable old Archbishop, acting as Christ's
representative, takes off his gilded vestments, and dressed only
in the alb, kneels down humbly before twelve poor old men,
washing their feet, drying and kissing them. " For I have given
you an example that as I have done to you, so you do also."
Of course, there is no school. The week of Easter holidays
has begun on Wednesday, and in all the homes a feverish
activity starts ： spring cleaning. Only in one corner the artist
of the family refuses to let any broom or duster come near
him ： he is making Easter eggs. First, they are boiled in their
colours ： red, blue, yellow, green and purple. After they have
dried, magic things happen to them. You can erase patterns
with oil-paint flowers and birds and words, even little bits of
music, on them. The words may even give slight indications
as to whom this egg is going to belong. You can fasten little
flowers, leaves, or herbs on the egg before you throw it into
the hot colour bath. When you take it out and remove the
string the shape of the flower or herb is clearly outlined. The
master of the craft is an important person in the house during
these days.

聖体拝受儀式のあと、聖木曜日の福音が読まれると、使徒たちの足を
洗うキリストの痛ましい出来事は、次のこの言葉で終わります．「では、
もし私が主としてあなたの足を洗えば、あなたもまた他者の足を洗うべ
きである．」
それゆえ、我らが大司教尊師様は、キリストに成り代わり、金色の衣を
脱ぎ、白色の麻の法衣だけを纏い、謙虚に１２使徒の前に跪き、その御足
を洗い、拭い、口づけるのです．「こうして手本を示したゆえに、汝らも
私が汝らにしたようにせよ．」
もちろん学校は休みです．イースター休日の週は水曜日に始まっています．
そして家庭内でも、熱っぽくイースター活動が始まります： 春の大掃除．
ただ一か所だけ、家庭内の芸術家が、箒も、はたきも近づけることを拒否
します：その芸術家はイースターのたまごを作っています．．まず、たまごは
色とりどりに茹であげられます：赤、青、黄色、緑 それに紫色で．
たまごが乾いたら、不思議なことが起こります．模様は油絵具で描かれた
花と鳥、それに言葉を少々で消すことができます．少しの音楽でさえ、たま
ごにかけると模様は消せるのです．その言葉には、たまごが誰のものになる
のか少しばかり暗示が込められているかも知れません．少しばかりの花、葉、
また薬草などをたまごにくっつけて、それから色のついた湯船に放り込みま
す．たまごを湯船から取り出して、花や、葉などの形をした紐をはずせば、
くっきりと模様が現れます．この工芸の巨匠はこのシーズンだけは家庭内の
重要人物となるのであります．

Therefore, the venerable old Archbishop, acting as Christ's

戯れにある高校生に訳せる？ときいたら
「だからなんか古い弓矢のお店がクライシスに陥って、服を脱いで
お金に変えて、危ない服だけを着てダウンしてお腹がすいた．
これで貧乏人のおじいちゃんが１２人になった．」
実はold がうまく訳せるかなと思って聞いてみたのだが、聞かなけれ
ばよかった．
old は通例「老～」と訳しますが本文のように高位の人を身近に表現する
ために用いた場合、少し工夫しましょう．たとえば水戸黄門を水戸のご老
公というように．（その場合はOld man of Mito) なので「老～」のあとに
「～様」などを付けると親近感がでるかもしれません．
「それゆえ、老大司教殿は、キリストに成り代わり、金色の衣を
脱ぎ、白色の麻の法衣だけを纏い、謙虚に１２使徒の前に跪き、
その御足を洗い、拭い、口づけるのです」
