To my distress I learned during the next weeks that it was
true : you can't play in the most beautiful garden if you
have always to take care of sailor suits and nice shoes on
week-days, silken dresses and white socks on Sundays. You
couldn't expect a white sailor blouse to look the same after
you had climbed that spruce over there in the corner.

悲しいことに、私はその翌週、やはりアガサの説明が
正しかったことを思い知らされます:平日はセーラー服や
素敵な靴を、日曜日は絹のドレスと白のソックスなんて、
いつもいつも気にしているようでは、とてもじゃないが
この美しい庭園内での遊戯はできません。
あの向こうの隅の針葉樹の木に登って遊んで、セーラー
服が、もとのまま美しい、なんてありえない。
