When the older children had left for school, I began classes
with Mria and Johanna.   The latter had started out bravely
to walk the two miles to school with others.
There were no school buses in Austria.

上の子たちが学校へ行ったあとで、私は、マリアと
ジョアンナの勉強を見ました。ジョアンナは、健気にも
３キロ強も離れた学校まで、ほかの子たちと一緒に
歩いていくようになりました。
オーストリアには、スクールバスがないのです。
