At the second-floor landing the Captain opened a door, and we climbed
another flight of stairs, this time narrow and winding to the third floor
and our destination, a large, sunny room opening out on a balcony.
Propped up on a mountain of pillows in an ancient, oversized, carved
wood bed, sat a little girl.

階段を上がったところで、大佐はドアを開けました。別の階段が
ありました。今度は狭い螺旋階段で３階まで登ります。
目的階はここでした。広くて、日差しのいい部屋でバルコニーに
出ることができます。彫刻をちりばめた古風な、大きめのベッドの中で
山のように寄り合わせた枕の上に、小さな女の子が座っていました。
