Shyly I knocked on the heavy oaken door,
which was so thick that I could hear only faintly
the "Ave,"the Benedictine equivalent of "Come in."

院長先生のいる部屋の一角に、たどり着く階段を登ったのですが、
その前に、どうしても、私は、しばしの間、立ち止まり、
この８世紀のグレー色した回廊の壁を
再び、見つめずには、おられませんでした。
おどおどしながら、私は、重たい樫の扉をノックしました。
それは、とても、ぶ厚い扉なので、
「アーヴェ」という、この教会の「お入りなさい。」
に相当する声も、かすかに、聞き取れた程度でした。

このbeforeは 「．．．before ~」という構文を作り、
「～する前に ．．．した」ということで、
「．．．しなければ～できなかった」
しばし小休止をし、再度グレー色の１８世紀の回廊の壁
に目をやらねば、院長先生の執事室のある場所に通じる
螺旋階段を上がることはできませんでした．
